LASER CLEANING OF STONES

Conservation of stones is the application field where the laser represents an established reality in the panorama of intervention methods. The first and most common use is the removal of black crusts and inorganic superficial encrustation on architectural elements and monuments. The use of the laser does not alter but preserves all the patinas present on stones between the substrate and the degradation. There are no unwanted side effects and the intervention, even for maintenance purposes, can be repeated several times.

Being able to dispose of different types of lasers in terms of wavelength and pulse duration makes it possible to intervene even on biological patinas, stuccos and plaster with the same results and effects as those that can be achieved on stone surfaces.

Recently, a new class of fiber lasers has been developed that are suitable to remove vandal writings and for interventions on large surfaces. These systems stand out for their high efficiency and portability with very low maintenance costs.
